Motorbikes, Radios and Dancehalls (self-released)

This trio — singer-guitarist Chris Allen, singer-guitarist Austin "Walkin' Cane" Charanghat and singer-bassist Tom Prebish — sounds like it was shooting for the Oh Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack with this unassuming disc. Bluegrass numbers like the gentle "Walk the Mile" and the freewheelin' "John Hardy" have an authentic flavor to them, helped by contributions from fiddle player Ed Caner and banjo man Dan Rose. Having three guys in the band who can sing provides great versatility as the group delivers everything from a woozy, Tom Waits-like ballad ("Billie Holiday Is on the Radio") to a hard-rocking redneck rave-up ("Motorbike"). — Jeff Niesel
